Syllabus

CATALOG DESCRIPTION

An introductory course in digital imaging and technology commonly used by photographers. Art and design principles, basic photography formats, composition and lighting in digital image making will be discussed and explored. Adobe Photoshop will be used in developing and manipulating digital images. Note: This course may be repeated once for a total of two enrollments since skill development is enhanced with a successive enrollment.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

Regular attendance in class is important since we cover a lot of material this semester.  Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class, but leaving early without my permission will also count as an absence.  Check with the Registration Office regarding procedure to drop this class. Turn your cell phone off before the beginning of class.  Points will be deducted for ringing cell phones or for answering a call during lectures.  Also, come prepared to work on Open Lab days. Open Lab days are not days off, you must come to class. It is strongly suggested that you take advantage of these in class workdays. Constructive and active participation in critiques and discussions is expected of everyone. Bonus points will be awarded, at my discretion, at the end of the semester to students who are prepared for and contribute above and beyond during discussions and critiques.  Attendance policies at Shasta College are based on the belief that students can profit from college only if they attend regularly and are adequately prepared for their classes.

Students are expected to attend all classes. A student who fails to attend the first class meeting of a course without notifying the instructor may be dropped from the class. In addition, an instructor may drop a student for excessive absences. IT IS ALWAYS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO OFFICIALLY DROP OR WITHDRAW FROM THE CLASS. Students who fail to file the necessary withdrawal forms, even though they stop attending class or fail to pay registration fees, will be assigned a course grade.

TECHNOLOGY

This class will use a class blog for grades and the dissemination of information and possibly quizzes.  Please subscribe to the blog as soon as possible to receive important class information.  There are computers available for your use in the library and the Learning Center as well as free web based email.

The best way to contact me is through email.  I will respond in less than 24 hours unless you receive an auto-response telling you otherwise.  I will check my email before each class.  Emailing me before class to tell me you are sick doesn’t excuse an absence.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Academic dishonesty is the fraud and deception for the purpose of improving a grade or obtaining course credit, and includes all student behavior intended to gain or provide unearned academic advantage by fraudulent and/or deceptive means.

The student has the full responsibility for the content and integrity of all academic work submitted. Ignorance of a rule does not constitute a basis for waiving the rule or the consequences of that rule. Students unclear about a specific situation should ask their instructors, who will explain what is and is not acceptable in their classes.  Violation of this policy will result in appropriate disciplinary action.  Please see the College Catalog for the entire policy.

We will be discussing plagiarism when we begin the research paper.

FINAL EXAM

The Final Exam will be scheduled the week of December 12-16, 2011.  More information will be posted on the website.
